Ecuador transferred the presidency of the Group of 77 and China to the Republic of Chad

- This January 24, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the World Trade Organization ( WTO) and other economic organizations in Geneva, Miguel Carbo Benites, delivered it on behalf of Ecuador, the Chair of the Group of 77 plus China, Geneva chapter, the same who served during 2013.
Applying the principle of regional rotation this year such liability shall be exercised by the Republic of Chad. The ceremony was held with the participation of Mukisha Kituyi, Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD ) and the Permanent Representatives in Geneva of the G -77 plus China and other guests.
During his speech, the Ecuadorian representative gave a summary of the activities undertaken by Ecuador during its presidency of the group, including the realization of a Retreat at Heads of Mission to define the group’s strategy for the coming years , in guidance for the main activities of the group in the near future that were established , such as theparticipation in the fiftieth anniversary of the group and UNCTAD to be held this year , as well as the generation of 2015 Post- Development Framework.
He also highlighted the signing of a cooperation framework with the Institute of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research ( UNITAR), which will allow delegates from the Group of 77 and China to benefit from scholarships study to take courses offered by that UN body, thereby strengthening the negotiating capacity of the group.
Subsequently, the coordinators of the regional groups and national delegations commended the work done by Ecuador during its presidency of the Group of 77 and China, highlighting the impetus given to the definition of strategies for the working groups in the coming years, the effort to strengthen their negotiating capacity and proactive approach given to the coordination of group participation in the various bodies of UNCTAD, which allowed that during 2013 they have met the goals on the planned schedule.
